A Positive Approach Delivers a Lasting Impact

Jamie Latko, owner of Niagara Apothecary Inc. was one of the first pharmacies to become accredited and offer DSMES services in her pharmacy. Through her encouraging guidance and hands-on approach, she focused on providing a positive perspective for addressing fears and concentrating on what you can do, not what you can’t. Her teaching style involved helping identify “pain points” and uncovering the root cause for some non-compliance and resistance to change patients with active listening and creating a welcoming environment for discussions.

“DSMES being conducted in pharmacy is so valuable because of the relationships formed. The pharmacist is always available in the community and facilitates a continuum of the educational process,” says Jamie.

After her 8-week class, not only did her patients enjoy the class, but asked if Jamie would be willing to form a support group at her pharmacy to continue learning and being able to cope with one another. Of course, she said yes!
